IBI Liquid Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth for Cultivation of Fastidious Microorganisms:
IBI Liquid Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth is a highly nutritious, ready-to-use liquid culture medium designed for the cultivation of pathogenic cocci and other fastidious microorganisms. This enriched microbiological medium supports the growth of a broad spectrum of bacteria through a balanced combination of key nutrients.
The formulation includes Brain Heart Infusion and Proteose Peptone, which supply essential carbon, nitrogen, and vitamins required for microbial metabolism. Dextrose serves as the fermentable carbohydrate source, promoting energy production. Sodium Chloride provides critical electrolytes to maintain osmotic balance, while Disodium Phosphate functions as a pH buffer, ensuring environmental stability during microbial growth.
When supplemented with sheep blood, IBI BHI broth supports the isolation and cultivation of fungi such as Histoplasma capsulatum. The presence of Gentamycin and Chloramphenicol renders the medium selective for fungal organisms by inhibiting the growth of contaminating bacteria.
Sterile Filtration, Quality Control, and Compliance Testing:
IBI Brain Heart Infusion broth undergoes sterile filtration using a 0.1 micron filter and is aseptically filled into sterile bottles within a controlled sterile suite. To ensure high purity and consistency, the broth is prepared using Type 1 certified reagent-grade water.
Every production lot of IBI BHI broth is rigorously tested to meet the highest quality standards. This includes a fluorometric assay for nuclease activity, bacterial endotoxin testing via Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) assay—meeting strict thresholds of <0.05 EU/mL—and full USP Sterility Testing to confirm the absence of microbial contamination.
