Tween 20: A Versatile Non-Ionic Detergent for Biochemical Applications:

Tween 20, also known by its CAS# 9005-64-5, is a highly effective non-ionic detergent extensively used in biochemical and laboratory settings. Renowned for its emulsifying properties, Tween 20 excels at forming stable oil-in-water emulsions, making it a critical component in various experimental protocols. Its gentle, non-ionic nature makes it ideal for removing peripheral proteins from membranes without damaging integral membrane structures. Furthermore, Tween 20 is a trusted choice for blocking agents in membrane-based immunoassays, typically used at a concentration of 0.05%, to prevent non-specific binding during experiments.

Product Highlights and Physical Specifications:

Available in 500ml or 1-liter bottles, Tween 20 is a premium-grade detergent that is DNase, RNase, and protease-free, ensuring its suitability for sensitive applications. Its physical characteristics include a yellowish liquid appearance with a hydroxyl value of 96-108, a saponification value of 40-50, and moisture content under 3.0%. Free of dioxane (<10ppm), with an acid value of <2.0 and a Gardner color of <5.0, this product guarantees exceptional purity. Manufactured in the U.S.A. by IBI and certified BSE/TSE-free, Tween 20 meets stringent quality standards for biochemical research.

TWEEN 20 Technical Info:

TWEEN 20 is polyoxyethylene sorbitol ester that belongs to the polysorbate family. It is a non-ionic detergent used commonly in biochemical applications.

TWEEN 20 can be stored at room temp in a cool dry area and the bottle should be sealed tightly when not in use.

IBI TWEEN 20 can be used as washing agent immunoassays such as Western Blots and ELISAs. It helps prevent non-specific antibody binding. In these applications it is typically dissolved in Tris-Buffered saline (TBS) or Phosphate Buffered saline (PBS) at dilutions of 0.05% in 1X or 0.5% in 10X solution. These buffers are used for washes between each immune-reaction, to remove unbound immunologicals, and eventually for incubating solutions of immuno-reagents such as labeled antibodies in order to reduce nonspecific background.

For premixed PBS with TWEEN 20 see IBI model numbers IB70167 and IB70168

TWEEN 20 is commonly used as a component of:

  • Blocking buffer in immunohistochemistry
  • Washing buffer and blocking buffer in Western Blotting
  • Washing buffer in ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay)
  • Reaction mixture in PCR  (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
